Christmas Eve. A time of joy and happiness, where everyone all around the world is seemingly happy, if only for a day. Christmas was always Joseph's favorite holiday. He loved everything about it. Carolers, snow, toasty fires, trees covered with decorations and presents. Yes, the presents. The thrill of never knowing what lies inside your packages always excited Joseph. However, this year was particularly different from all the rest, it had a special feel to it that prior years were lacking. Perhaps it was because he'd been relieved of his wrestling duties for a couple of days? No. Maybe it was because he was riding high with his Custom Cup Championship, hauling it with him everywhere he went. Or maybe it was because, for the first time ever, he had a girlfriend whom he could cherish every moment spent together with? Yes, that was it.
Joseph and Kathy spent the entire day in downtown New Haven. Not necessarily looking to buy anything for friends and relatives, rather just killing time, walking in and out of several local gift shops. Exhausted, they decided to give their feet a rest and treat themselves to some Ben & Jerry's ice cream, sitting down at a table nearby the city's giant Christmas tree, located in the heart of the town.
"This is so nice" said Kathy, getting to spend time with you during the holidays".
Yeah, I'm just glad we managed to avoid the rush and got everything out of the way early" Joe told her. "I hate last minute shopping" he continued.
"Speaking of presents" Kathy said matter-of-factly, "we need to wrap our stocking gifts tonight".
"Shit, we better get going then" Joseph told her, "it's already ten o'clock".
Agreeing, Kathy got up and threw what was left of her cookie dough ice-cream in the trash. Joseph followed her lead, tossing the remains of his peppermint candy ice-cream into the garbage. Joseph jogged up to Kathy, grabbing her hand and walking beside her. Kathy leaned her head upon his shoulder and continued walking. Joseph was looking at the last minute shoppers when a thought entered his head. Did you ever notice how increasingly rare it is to see a couple, not talking teenagers here, holding hands in public? That was not the case with Joseph and Kathy. Their love for each other was too strong to let a little embarrassment cross their minds. They completely understood each other inside and out, as if they were brother and sister or longtime childhood friends. After originally having this idea, Joseph suddenly couldn't help himself from trying to find a couple holding hands. Yet, after reaching the front door of his house, he'd found none.
"Honey, how come nobody holds hands anymore" he asked her.
"Out of fright would be my first guess" she said.
"Well if you're frightened of holding hands with someone, then why are you with that person? Becuase, when you think about it, if you're with someone you truly love, then there should be nothing to be afraid of, right?" he questioned.
I suppose...but maybe because it's so uncommon today, people would feel corny if they do it" she replied, walking up the steps.
"You don't feel corny when we hold hands do you?" he said, giving chase.
"Of course not!" she said flatly, glancing at him before unlocking and opening the door.
Kathy walked into the house as if it were her own, dropping her purse on the kitchen table and her keys alongside them. She checked the answering machine..."No new messages" it replied. Kathy walked over to the closet, opening it and pulling out a pillowcase stuffed with indefinable objects.
"What's that?" Joseph asked, grabbing her around the waist and tickling her.
"Your stocking gifts. Now stop that, you know I'm ticklish" she said, giving him a peck on the lips before pushing him away.
"Alright" said Bennison, sighing. Joseph opened his sock drawer and pulled out a bag of his own, which were obviously Kathy's stocking presents. "I'll be wrapping yours over here" he said, sitting on the floor next to the side of the bed.
"I'll do mine here then" said Kathy, plopping down on the opposite side of the bead.
"Baby, will you get the wrapping paper, please" he pleaded, giving her the puppy-dog face he knew she loved.
"If you insist" she said, running into the other room.
As soon as she was out of sight, Joseph hopped to his feet, running to the coat rack next to the door and pulling out a pearl necklace out of his left coat pocket. Bennison quickly scurried back across the room and sat down just before Kathy reentered.
"Here, you wrap mine in red and I'll wrap yours in green, since green is your favorite color" she said, handing him the thin red paper.
"You're always thinking of me aren't you dear?" he said, snatching the paper out of her hands.
"So we're having dinner with your parents on Thursday, right?" she said, double checking.
"I leave Tuesday, I told you that Friday" he said, raising his tone.
"I swore you told me Thursday Joey" she said, beginning to get a little antsy.
"You know what" said Bennison, exhaling, "we'll just have to have dinner with them Tuesday before I leave" he said.
"Why not have a Christmas Day dinner with them?" she asked.
"Because, it's too late to call them right now. It's nearly eleven, they're already sleeping by now. Plus, calling them tomorrow gives them a whole day to prepare for Tuesday, rather than the six hours it would take if we were to call them tomorrow morning" he told her.
"How come those assholes never give you any time off?" she said, beginning to get flustered.
"Tyler Smith?" he asked. Kathy shrugged her shoulders so as to say she didn't give a fuck. "Well, we hardly ever get three days off. Wrestling is a full-time schedule unless you get hurt, but I make good money doing it so I have no regrets".
Kathy didn't reply, so Joseph knew that she understood where he was coming from. They finished wrapping each others gifts without hardly uttering a word. Once they were finished, Kathy went into the bathroom to change into her nightgown. Meanwhile, Joe got up as well, pulling out a videotape from his gym bag and popping it into the VCR. He grabbed the remote and slipped back into bed, setting the controller on the nightstand. It was a video of assorted John Krone matches. Moments later, Kathy came out to go to bed.
"Jesus christ Joseph, it's eleven o'clock and you know I don't like wrestling" she said haughtily.
"And you know that I always scout my opponents before a match, especially before a pay-per-view".
"I don't give a shit, you'll have to find a better time than now" she said simply.
"This is the biggest match of my career, there are huge ramifications involved" he tried to explain.
"I'm not changing my mind" she said angrily.
"You just don't know the situation. It may not matter to you, but it means the world to me".
"No I don't know anything about wrestling and I don't know the situation you're in. But it's almost midnight and why you always decide to review these tapes in the dead of night I'll never know. But what I do know is that it's almost midnight and I'm tired. I've had a long day and would like some shut eye".
"I've had just as long of a day as you have"
"Then you must be tired as well, now let's get some sleep" she said turning off the lights and the television.
Joseph Bennison chucked the remote at the wall. He could hear it ricochet off the wall and fall on the ground with a crash, the batteries coming out and rolling across the linolium floor. He heard Kathy sniffle, but refused to open his mouth. He couldn't fathom why Kathy hated wrestling with a passion. But what he did understand was that his match against John Krone, at Reincarnation, was a mere five days away. It would be the biggest match of his career to date, bag vs. title. And he would be totally unprepared.
